DNA July 2010 has been and gone. It was awesome to see so many people make the effort to come out and support all our wicked stallholders!!! Here's hoping all our stallholders had as good a time as we here at DI did!

A huge thank you to all those who helped to promote DNA! You're all wicked!

DNA – the Xmas Edition is currently in the making.

The plan, so far, is to book a venue for DNA around late November/early December but at a time so that it does not coincide with any other major events in the city.

So keep your eyes peeled for up-dates on this:)

Sylph Glass

What started as a gasp of awe at the sparkle and glint of sunlight bouncing off a majestic leadlight window has evolved into a passion for all things glass.
That perfect piece of fused glass jewellery using dichroic glass and sterling silver, that piece of glass art which captures your imagination, the world being seen in a different light through suncatchers and stained glass leadlight windows or that magical song of a windchime being played by the breeze.
In 2009 I entered 5 pieces in the DeVetro art glass competition and gained 1st place in both the leadlight window and the Kiln worked glass categories, second place in the fused glass jewellery category and attained a highly commended in the stained glass suncatcher and and lampshade categories.
As an artist, I have yet to find something that beats the feeling when I finally get to see a challenging design as a whole and complete creation. When I am able to lift the glass piece as a whole to see the colours true with the light behind them, or behold the completed piece of contemporary jewellery after the final polish... when my breath catches in my throat because the piece is so much more than my minds eye could imagine.
That 'WOW! I can't believe I created that!' feeling is what I chase.

'We are two girls in the Auckland City region that are really into fashion design, crafts and art'.

Aside from original goods the girls also have an eclectic collection of vintage clothes they have up-cycled to create original pieces fitting their style.

'Basically we have accumulated vintage clothing, cleaned them up and added/altered anything we think will make it cute. Our style is girlie (think ballerina) meets a bit grunge'.

Art-Brooches by Claire Fairweather!!!

Since emigrating from the UK to New Zealand in March 2009, Claire has been using various media to create unique contemporary brooches. The 'Art-Brooch' is a new concept in jewellery - a 'one-off' small piece of art, which when not being worn, fits into a frame to hang on the wall.

'I like to come up with original ideas and feel my Art-Brooch designs give a modern twist to what is sometimes considered an old-fashioned type of jewellery'

At the market, Claire will be selling a range of framed Art-Brooches, along with some ‘bargain’ end of line/trial brooches.

Muzroom was born out of a girl called Muz making jewellery in her room. She gets her inspiration from the surrounding environment in the Waitakere ranges, the birds and the trees. The art forms graffiti and illustration also play a part in her creations.

I am a self-taught artist based in Auckland since 1995. As an artist I was mostly inspired by impressionists, especially by Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh. I love bright colours because they are great mood elevators and can show how I see the world around me.
Recently I’ve started making jewellery, so both painting and jewellery making supplement each other in my artistic mind.

I'm a self taught, full time working artist. I enjoy creating my own styles of painting. The use of vibrant colours is the main inspiration for my works. I love exploring the combination of textures with abstract creations. I exhibit widely and my works are sold throughout New Zealand and beyond. I also receive regular invitations to contribute to various charitable auctions both in New Zealand and overseas.

Cecilia says:

'I graduated in 2005, receiving a Bachelor of Fashion Design from AUT. My designs were selected in to the Illumination Illusion Section of the World of Wearable Art Awards in 2004 and I was also awarded as a finalist in the Trash to Fashion Awards in 2004.

I have experience in making evening gowns, bridal and dancing wear. My designs were presented at the Rookie Show of New Zealand Fashion Week 2005 and Kiwi Asia Fashion Show in 2006.

I also make jewellery to match my designs and ornaments created using a technique called knotting'.

Natasya says:

'I love anything from the 20s right through to the 50s and you may have noticed that the glam era of the 30s and 40s are creeping back into popular fashion. Swing dancing is huge, burlesque is back and mini top hats and feather fascinators are all the rage.

Most of my designs are one of a kind originals. It's very rare to find two pieces the same because I get bored with making the same stuff and I like that my customers all have something totally unique just for them.

I can also custom make you pretty much anything to match your outfit or mood, whether it be for a wedding, the races, a special occasion or just because.

New to DNA is Robyn Robertson from the label Woman of Joppa, an upcycled clothing range.

"Upcycling is the art of making one off original garments by rearranging, cutting, adding and/or embellishing recyclable clothing. I raise clothing from the dead!

Instead of merely being used as polishing cloths, I tailor beautiful garments from throw away clothing.

I love the thought of not being wasteful just because our clothes are no longer fashionable or useful anymore!

I think my label 'WOMAN OF JOPPA' says it all!"

I am a focused and highly self motivated artist who has a passion for painting. I live to paint and paint to live. Most of my current work is painting, I have a sound interest in photography and sculpture. I also have a passion for arts management/curatorship, and working with artists and other curators.

I currently live in Auckland and am about to embark on a Masters Arts Management at Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design. I am inspired by abstract expressionism, graffiti, gestural mark making, performance, hybridity, cargo containers and automatism. I am also into bookbinding. Sorry guys, we've been out of action for a week or two due to our label DMONIC INTENT participating in the New Zealand Herald Designer Garage Sale.

We're back now and ready to roll into action.

We're planning tonnes of new ways to advertise the market and will be putting these plans into action as soon possible.

We've only got about 2 and a half months before the event so if you could advertise the market on your blogs/websites we'd greatly appreciate it:)

Steff Metal!!!

Our latest DNA stallholder is Steff Metal.

Steff creates illustration-style artwork with a gothic / heavy metal / archaeological bend. These artworks are featured as different-sized art prints, greeting cards and postcard sets.

We love how Steff mixes a dark theme with awesomely vivid colour!

We here at DI automatically fell in love with Steff Metal's work and look forward to getting our hands on a couple of her pieces the day.

Elizabeth Fisher from Distant Drum!

New to the DNA crew is Elizabeth Fisher from Distant Drum. Elizabeth creates large and small abstract, design orientated paintings and message, story orientated collages. Wicked!!!

Elizabeth is also hoping to show 3D objects created using the same ‘collage / story’ vein and maybe one or two collaged screens / rooms dividers.

Check this out!!! Sarah Alexander is an artist who paints the most beautiful abstract landscapes which she adorns with quirky, stuffed creatures also made by her. We here @ DI just love it!!!

Her work is so cool she has been accepted to take part in First Thursdays on the 4th March at St Kevins Arcade up on K'Road.

So if you've got no plans on the night, make your way up to First Thursdays this week to grab an original piece by an original artist. If you can't make it you can always get one of her amazing pieces at the DNA Market in July:)

We started making these crazy little freaks a couple of months ago now. It actually happened accidentally when one member of the DI crew tried to make a teddy bear head only to have it turn out looking like a camels foot. They have actually proven to be really popular. Each one has its own costume which is sad because when you sell one you feel as if one is missing. There is everything from babies, chefs, emo's, business men, sleazy game show hosts and our favourite – Rambo!!!

DNA 2010!!!

The DNA Market is back for 2010!!! New year – new location. This year it is being held at the Mt Albert War Memorial Hall on the corner of Wairere Ave and New North Road, Mt Albert.

The market is scheduled for Saturday the 3rd of July from 1pm till 5pm.

We will be spending this time leading up to the market advertising every opportunity we get.

If you are interested in having a stall at the DNA Market you can find the link to the application form on the right hand column.

The cut off date for applications is the 19th of June. After that date we will be processing the applications and informing both successful and unsuccessful applicants.

So get on board and join the DNA crew, be it a stallholder or visitor.
